Vegetarian Mud Cupcakes

These cupcakes was specially made for  the devotees and public who visited 千佛禅寺 (Thousand Buddha Temple) last Saturday (5th may 2012) -- in conjunction with Wesak Day's celebration.

Name of the Cake/cupcake: Vegetarian Mud Cake
Decoration: Lotus flowers ( some fully bloomed, some closed)
Significance of design:

The lotus flower represents one symbol of fortune in Buddhism. It grows in muddy water, and it is this environment that gives forth to the flower’s first and most literal meaning: rising and blooming above the murk to achieve enlightenment. The second meaning, which is related to the first is purification. It resembles the purifying of the spirit which is born into murkiness. The third meaning refers to faithfulness. Those who are working to rise above the muddy waters will need to be faithful followers.

4 colors were used for the flowers - Green, Yellow, Red and white. The colors were chosen according to those written in Amithaba Sutra, a Mahayana Sutra which the devotees are familiar with. It's one of the important Sutra for those Pure Land Buddhism followers.

The stage of growth of the lotus flower represents a different stage of enlightenment. That is why we made some fully bloomed lotus and some closed. A closed lotus flower represents the time before a Buddhist follower found Buddha or enlightenment. A lotus flower fully bloomed and open represents full enlightenment and self-awareness.

In Buddhism, the mud represents an importance meaning to the lotus flower. All humans are born in a world full with suffering. This suffering is a vital part of the human experience; it makes us stronger and teaches us to resist the temptation of evil. When we banish evil thoughts from our mind we are able to break free of the muddy water and become one with the Buddha. The mud shows us who we are and teaches us to choose the right path over the easy one.

An important color in Buddhist mysticism is GOLD. We choose gold colour cups for the cakes because "Gold" in Buddhism represents achievement of full enlightenment, i.e Buddhahood.
